When a slew ring fails beyond repair, replacement is a major undertaking that requires careful planning. The process involves safely lifting the entire upper structure off the undercarriage—a task that often requires a large mobile crane in a controlled environment like a workshop. The old bearing is removed, and the mounting surfaces on both the upper and lower frames must be meticulously cleaned and inspected for damage or warping. Installing the new slew ring requires precise alignment to ensure the gear teeth mesh correctly with the pinion and that the bearing sits perfectly level. Bolts must be torqued to exact specifications in the correct sequence. Due to the complexity, cost of the part, and labor intensity, a slew ring replacement represents one of the most significant repairs on an excavator, underscoring the importance of preventative care.
